Lodged in an earth-centered “in-between”, my work explores the inevitably queer space organic growth and decay exists in. Joined by a resistance to clear and static category, boundaries, and definition, constant organic processes and the fluid ambiguity of queerness play out in the body. Standing at this intersection of queerness and ecology, the queer body is inextricable from nature as it partakes and thrives in the same constant transformation of growth and decomposition. Grounded in that celebration of things transitioning, my work often translates fluidly through a variety of media as it’s made, distilling a visual language from the in-between states of organic matter.
My recent work frequently starts in film photo documentation of direct performances of these themes. These photos are then physically and/or digitally manipulated, added to, and decomposed in mixed media collages, often including organic material. The work sometimes bleeds further into realms of painting and drawing. The result is a visual language created and spoken in the transparencies of organic methods, using decomposition as a catalyst for new growth.
